If your building is due for anchor load testing, you’re taking the right step toward compliance and safety. OSHA 1910.27 and ANSI Z359 standards require that all permanent fall protection anchors be load tested at least once every 10 years, or sooner if required by the manufacturer.

But many building owners and managers don’t know what to expect — or how to prepare. Here’s how to get your property ready and avoid costly delays.

What Is Load Testing?

Load testing is the process of physically stressing each anchor point with a controlled force, usually 2,500 lbs or more, to confirm it can withstand the required weight.

This is different from a visual inspection, which is done annually. Load testing verifies structural integrity and ensures the anchor is safe for workers to tie off to.

Step-by-Step: Preparing for Anchor Load Testing

  1. Locate All Existing Anchors
    • Use your roof plans or previous inspection reports to identify every anchor on your property.
    • Don’t have documentation? We can help with a site assessment.
  2. Clear the Roof of Debris & Obstructions
    • Ensure technicians have safe, clear access to each anchor point.
    • Remove rooftop furniture, HVAC obstructions, or snow buildup in advance.
  3. Notify Building Occupants
    • Testing may involve visible rigging or rooftop access. Let tenants or employees know in advance to avoid concern or disruption.
  4. Confirm Roof Access & Safety Compliance
    • Technicians may need elevator keys, roof hatches unlocked, or security escort access.
    • Make sure your building complies with general access safety (guardrails, ladders, etc.).
  5. Schedule During Good Weather
    • While many tests can be done in varied conditions, rain, ice, or high winds may delay testing for safety reasons.

What to Expect During Testing

  • Technicians will use hydraulic or mechanical load test equipment.
  • Each anchor is tested for strength, and results are recorded.
  • You’ll receive a detailed compliance report, including any issues found.

If any anchors fail, our team can immediately advise on repair or replacement options.
